How to Control paper airplane | Control surfaces of Paper airplane

Flying an airplane is not as easy as it seems in video games. There are many numbers of control surfaces which are attached to the structure of the aircraft controls them to reach countries to countries, cities to cities and etc.., Primary control surfaces like Aileron, Elevator, Rudder are considered to be the main control units of aircrafts helps them performing various motions. Have a look at the below picture which has different control surfaces mentioned with different colors for your understanding. The actual airplane doesn’t look like this but the colored areas in below picture shows you the different controls in an aircraft.

Control surfaces in Paper airplanes and Big metal aircrafts are the same and their purposes remain exact. But, the positions and sizes differ. For example, Airplanes have elevators attached in the tail stabilizer and aileron attached in the Primary wings. Whereas in most of the paper airplane designs they are in the one place and acts as one. And they are called Elevons = Elevators + ailerons. Let’s understand them in detail yet simpler in ways.

Simple design:

The Paper airplane below shows the simple and efficient design which is designed only for travelling straight and to reach far. It has the fuselage where you hold and throw. Green section is the wing and blue acts as the winglet to make a stable flight. A slight change in the winglet design makes the flying pattern different everytime. Let’s make it fun and experimental to understand this. Go to Eagle paper airplane and make them using liftndrift easy & illustrated instructions!

Experiment 1:

After completion of your making of Eagle eye, paper airplane fly it in the air. Observe its pattern of flying.

Experiment 2:

Now, fold the right side winglet downside from upside. Try it now and observe the flying pattern. Comment the changes below you are seeing now! This is what aircrafts also doing when they are actually in the sky! They clearly understand the purpose of the control surfaces and use it accordingly to perform actions and executions.

Technical Design:

This technical design illustration shows you the detailed & the possibilities of control surfaces in paper airplanes. The changes in control surfaces and their results are likely,

  • Fold both Elevators Up >> Paper airplane Nose Up – Pitch Up
  • Fold both Elevator down >> Paper airplane Nose down – Pitch Down
  • Right elevator up, Left elevator down >> Right side roll – Clockwise
  • Right elevator down, Left elevator up >> Left side roll – Anti-Clockwise
  • Rudder adjustment to the right >> Yaw right
  • Rudder adjustment to left >> Yaw left
  • Leading Edge flaps works the same as Elevators but they make quick turns, rolls and pitches in Airplanes.

To perform Combined actions like pitch up while rolling, Roll and yaw, Yaw and pitch down – different combinations of Control surface foldings are required. For you to master the Paper airplane controls, make more paper planes and implement these above-dotted points in your control surfaces. This may help you to create some of the best and unique paper airplanes for the world.

We LND believes that paper airplanes are not only fun but they are pure aircraft science out there inspiring millions of young minds to create something new everyday in the endless discoveries in space technology. Paper airplanes could be a real help for you to understand things better and easier.
