Learn How to make a Paper Airplane from Expert Aeronautical Engineers!

This website is all about how to make a paper airplane and the deeper science involved in making paper airplanes. Have you ever wondered how a thin Paper plane flies high in the sky? and how do Birds, Paper airplanes, Aircraft, and Rockets Fly? What makes an eagle float in the air? From those ideas takes birth the Airplanes! Bird’s wings usually have a shape called “Aerofoil” which makes them fly! As a result of this idea and inspiration, Otto Lilienthal made a successful flying glider. Most importantly this inspired Wright Brothers to invent their first successful flight Aircraft. Birds fly by flapping their wings!

But Airplanes cannot fly by flapping, they use their aerofoil design and engines for flying. However, the Best Paper plane design gets thrust and lift from our throw. According to Bernoulli’s principle how to make a Paper airplane fly is by increasing thrust from drag by throwing and by Increasing Lift from the Weight by Paper plane designs.  Let’s discuss in short the science behind what makes paper airplanes fly!

What makes a good paper airplane?

Paper airplanes are always exciting, an uncommon sort of aircraft that has no power plant (engine).  Basically, every paper jet has three major forces acting on them that are called Aerodynamic forces – Lift, Gravity (Weight), and Drag. Whereas the fourth necessary force is achieved by tossing the airplane i.e. Thrust. Commercial aircraft usually achieve their Thrust by using the engines present in their wings.  But here in the absence of engines at paper planes, we can counteract the lack of forwarding power by Throwing the paper airplane as efficiently as possible.

When a paper plane travels through the fluid (air), Air acts against the surface of the plane further slowing it down due to the drag produced. To understand drag better – let us imagine you place your hand out of a car window, you will start feeling the force on your palm and the force further moves your hand back from its existence. For the second experiment if you put your hand horizontally (parallel) to the moving direction the drag gets reduced because of the reduced surface area. This can further prove that paper airplane control surfaces and their flight performances are decided based on the kind of design you apply according to the above principle.

Coming back to the fun part of paper planes, they can be easily constructed and flown by kids of any age. Also, School kids can become familiar with the fundamentals of airplane movement by flying paper planes.

History of Paper airplane:

The invention of paper gave birth to so many greater things in history.  The widespread of papers have begun during the 500 BCE. Whereas all of ancient china and japan learned the way of Origami during that time.  Origami has come to life even before the time of most of the ancient inventions. It is estimated to have dated approximately 460 – 390 BCE.  Some historians claim that the Chinese could’ve invented the paper airplane even before the existence of the paper kite.

This demands a better understanding of materials and their behaviors in the air medium.  This later evolved as an aerodynamic theory where modern science uses this principle to fly their machines into the air & beyond.  The legend Leonardo DaVinci has even recorded that he made his flying prototypes out of parchment paper.  From kites, it leads humans into flying blimps and so far. Now we have space crafts to re-entry vehicles that have occupied the space. Thanks to paper aircraft or whatsoever began the good work for all of us.

The evolution of aircraft:

To begin, let’s talk about the famous linen glider built by George Cayley during the early 19th century. This helped him identify four aerodynamic forces of flight.  The world was excited about paperplane then and now. Because whatever principles work on the paper plane works the same way in aircraft too.  The rigidity & density of your paper air plane has the same strength as real aircraft materials only the scale differs.  Origami paper aircraft designs are found in paper notes and passed through teaching from earlier times.  Since technology has grown nowadays you get a lot of CAD-designed paper airplanes in pdfs, digital, and book formats.

Currently, all of our lives are filled with the memories of paper aeroplane making. This is something that we all would cherish for life remembering our loved ones.  Now we see a lot of engineers & scientists using the paper plane for testing their real aircraft. All of these people once made paper aircraft like all of us.  Some gentlemen even pursue paper airplane making as an interesting hobby.  Paper airplanes are simple to easy to learn and simple to make. What you need is a sheet of paper and a little more curiosity to learn.  This is a toy with n number of possibilities and infinite learning for aeronautics and aerodynamics.
